What is a Garage Door?

A garage door is a large door on a garage that opens either manually or by an electric motor (a garage door opener). Garage doors are frequently large enough to accommodate automobiles and other vehicles. Small garage doors may be made in a single panel that tilts up and back across the garage ceiling. Larger doors are usually made in several jointed panels that roll up on tracks across the garage ceiling, or into a roll above the doorway.

Modern garage doors are usually made of steel, aluminum, wood, vinyl, and fiberglass. Steel doors are usually made with 24-gauge steel, and are the most common. Aluminum doors are lightweight and do not rust. Wood doors can be painted to match the house and are insulated for sound and temperature control. Vinyl and fiberglass doors are less expensive and require less maintenance than wood doors.

How a Garage Door Works?

Garage doors are operated by a motorized garage door opener, which can be operated by a remote control or a wall-mounted switch. The motorized garage door opener is connected to the door by a series of pulleys, chains, and cables. When the opener is activated, the door is lifted up and the motorized opener moves the door along a track until it is fully opened.

When the door is closed, the motorized opener reverses the direction of the door and moves it back along the track and into the closed position. The motorized opener also contains a safety mechanism that will reverse the door if it encounters an obstacle. This prevents the door from closing on a person or object.
